Occupational therapy jobs may be described as one of the most challenging yet rewarding jobs around. Occupational therapists help patients who suffer either from mental, physical, developmental or emotional disabling conditions. They help patients improve their abilities to perform tasks or activities which have been impaired due to their health conditions.
Occupational therapists are trained to care for such patients with special needs. An occupational therapist may be assigned to a school to help aid children who have a disability or impairment. The therapist will first observe the child in the school surroundings and determine and recommend different items that may help to improve the way the child can function in school. The therapist may recommend equipment that will be placed in the classroom so the child can become more involved in classroom activities. The therapist may stay with the child during the day so they can help him or her in the classroom.
When the patient is elderly, the therapist can go into the nursing home or private home in order to see how the patient lives and to see what assistance can be offered to ensure a more independent lifestyle. Adaptive equipment may be necessary in order to continue with daily task. The adaptive equipment may be necessary for the vehicle used to drive the patient or the therapist may arrange for alternative transportation options.
The therapist will need to assess the home and the environment for any hazards that may harm the patient as well. They can also help those who are suffering from short-term memory impairment or Alzheimer patients to improve their memory skills like make lists to help them get through their day.
There are also instances where children with disabilities or impairments need to be helped in school. The occupational therapists role may be to evaluate the childs capabilities, recommend and provide therapy. They can also help modify classroom equipment to help the child participate in school activities. If there is more than one child in a class that needs help, the occupational therapist may opt to work with the children individually or lead small groups in the classroom.
Occupational therapists help patients whose abilities have been disrupted by physical illness or injury, congenital or developmental ability, emotional or cognitive disorder, or by the ageing process. They work with these patients, wherever they are, to achieve health and independence, to be able go about their daily tasks. Very challenging roles, yet very rewarding.
